Birthdays, weddings, family reunions, 4th of July, it seems like every year there are more holidays than the previous year. Most people get excited about an upcoming event, but for a recovering addict, these situations can be pure anxiety. When I was in early sobriety the last thing I wanted to do was go to a birthday party and see everyone else drinking and enjoying themselves. Addiction is like an upcoming boxing match every day of your life. The best way to beat it is by being prepared. If an addict makes it through the first 10 months then the year ends with holidays and new years. This is a very common relapse time for many addicts and alcoholics.

The holidays can be a very stressful time. I know I used the holidays as an excuse to drink and use more drugs. Both of my relapses have been during the holidays. Stress and holiday time off of work, with nothing to do is what I believe led to my complacency and eventual relapse. We are expected to buy presents, attend parties, be with friends and family, many of whom drink in excess. As well as family members that we may not get along with, so be prepared during the holidays can help fight off those temptations and cravings.
Remember to enjoy yourself!! Being sober is a very rewarding lifestyle. I like to do something new during the holidays to make it fun and fresh. Another fun thing to do is to give to various charities. If you do not have money to give you can donate your time.
